Musical Selections

Rhiannon Giddens (b. 1977), “At the Purchaser’s Option” (arranged by Jacob Garchik): Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Giddens is a folk musician best known as a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, for whom she sang and played banjo and fiddle. An eclectic musician, she has won a Grammy Award for best traditional folk album; is one of the few musicians to have played at both the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals; and won a Pulitzer Prize for Music for the opera “Omar,” which she co-wrote in 2023.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904), String Quintet in G major, Op. 77: Born near Prague, in the Austrian Empire. His father worked as an innkeeper, a butcher, and a professional zither player. Dvorak showed early talents in music, and his father allowed him to become a musician — on the condition that he work toward a career as an organist. After graduating from Prague’s Organ School, Dvorak joined an orchestra that performed in restaurants and at balls in Prague. He supplemented his income by giving piano lessons, which is how he met his future wife. His life as a composer was significantly aided by an Austrian State Prize for composition that he won in 1874. The report for the prize described Dvorak as a relatively poor music teacher whose compositions “display an undoubted talent,” and who “deserves a grant to ease his straitened circumstances and free him from anxiety in his creative work.” The very next year, Dvorak composed the string quintet being performed tonight. Dvorak was one of the first major European composers to spend time in the United States. He was here from September 1892 until February 1895, including a summer spent with a Czech community in Spillville, Iowa. Dvorak was influenced greatly by his time here, and two major works — the “New World” Symphony and the “American” String Quartet — were written and premiered in the United States to great acclaim.
Dvorak String Quintet movements:
- Allegro con fuoco
- Scherzo, Allegro vivace
- Poco andante
- Finale, Allegro assai

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), String Quartet in A major, Op. 18 No. 5: Born in Bonn, and famed for innovative compositions that took classical music into the Romantic period. Beethoven is perhaps best known for his 9 symphonies and 16 string quartets. The quartets were written in three distinct blocks, leading to them being characterized as Early (quartets 1-6), Middle (quartets 7-11), and Late (quartets 12-16). Tonight’s piece is the fifth quartet in his first group of six. Beethoven did not begin writing string quartets until the relatively late age of 27, and his cover note to a friend gives a sense of his hesitation: “For only now have I learned to write quartets properly – as you will surely see when you receive them.”
Beethoven String Quartet movements:
- Allegro
- Menuetto – Trio
- Andante cantabile
- Allegro assai
