Musical Selections

String Quartet in E flat major by Fanny Mendelssohn (Hensel) (1805-1847): Born in Germany to a prominent family, including her grandfather, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. She was recognized as a prodigy, and studied piano and composition. But her parents’ support only went so far, her father writing to her that while music might become her brother’s profession, it “can and must be only an ornament” for her. However, Fanny’s brother Felix respected her talents, as did her eventual husband, Wilhelm Hensel, who encouraged her to seek publication of her works. She died at 42 of complications from a stroke.
- Adagio ma non troppo
- Allegreto
- Romanze
- Allegro molto vivace

String Octet in E flat major, Op. 20 by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847): Born in Germany to a prominent family, including his grandfather, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. He was recognized as a prodigy, and began studying composition as early as age 10. Mendelssohn was in poor health late in life, exacerbated by anxiety and overwork, and died at 38 after a series of strokes, less than six months after his sister Fanny died.
- Allegro moderator ma con fuoco
- Andante
- Scherzo: Allegro leggierissimo
- Presto
