Anderson Park has five entry points, which are all asphalt walkways on-grade at the curb for smooth wheelchair access. The pathways have gentle grades and are welcoming to wheelchairs. The southern entrance (Parkside Road) has two designated, signposted handicapped parking spaces. The primary northern entrance on Bellevue Avenue is directly across the street from two public lots that both have designated handicapped parking.

ADA Plan

The purpose of the ADA Plan is to specify ways that Friends of Anderson Park can make this Essex County park and the programs we offer there welcoming to and fully usable by people with disabilities.

Mission Statement: Friends of Anderson Park is a non-profit conservancy dedicated to thoughtful stewardship of Anderson Park in Montclair, New Jersey, and to fostering its historic, natural, cultural, environmental and educational qualities. Our primary mission is to protect the spirit and integrity of the park’s nationally significant Olmsted-designed landscape and to rehabilitate and maintain its pastoral ambiance.

Friends of Anderson Park is committed to making the park, our programs, and our website and other communications accessible to all.

Our conservancy does not discriminate on the basis of disability in access to this Essex County park; treatment of volunteers or employees; or in providing access to our services, programs and activities.

Upon request, accommodation will be provided to allow individuals with disabilities to participate in Friends of Anderson Park’s programs and activities, within our ability. Friends of Anderson Park has a designated coordinator to facilitate compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), as required by Section 35.107 of the U.S. Department of Justice regulations, and to coordinate compliance with Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

While these laws mandate equal access to people with disabilities, Friends of Anderson Park  makes it a priority to establish an environment that embraces the spirit of the law, ensuring an enriching experience for all. Upon request, we will work to make information available in alternative formats such as large print, computer disc, flash drive, or on the Friends of Anderson Park’s website.

To ensure access to Anderson Park and to the programs and events our conservancy provides:

• Awareness of available accessibility and accommodations
• Well-designated handicapped parking adjacent to the park
• Appropriate grade-levels access points for wheelchairs and rollators.

We offer on our website and social media:

• An accessibility menu on website
• The UserWay Accessibility Widget and software on our website that allows us to improve compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

We are working on:

• Technology to improve accessibility on our social media and email communications.

Accommodations we may be able to offer with advance notice:

• Assistance in escorting people in wheelchairs to our concert seating
• Accommodations for Scouts participating in Arbor Day planting, and others participating in historic walking tours, volunteer activities, and other events and activities.

Contact our conservancy’s ADA Coordinator (contact info is in this document). If the request is more appropriately addressed by the owner of the park, Essex County, we will reach out to Essex County and update you on progress.

For any incident in which you believe you have been denied any service, program or activity, or have been discriminated against because of a disability, please provide:

• Date and time of the incident
• Name and phone number of any witness to the incident
